Despite the announcement by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers of the decision to exempt Syrians residing abroad from customs duties when shipping their personal belongings and household utensils from abroad in case they intend to permanently reside in Syria, dozens of trucks carrying these luggage are still parked on the Syrian-Jordanian border.
A special source at the Syrian border told “Hashtag” that the last decision has not yet been implemented, and the number of trucks carrying Syrians’ belongings has reached nearly 70 so far, stressing that the number would be greater, were it not for fears of waiting at the border for a longer period.
While customs sources justified the decision to stop the implementation of the duty exemption decision as a result of some people “exploiting” the exemption decision, and the start of a “trading” process in furniture and electrical items, meaning that the trucks on the border carry not only Syrians’ items, but a large part of them It is subject to “trade” and this is contrary to the status of the customs declaration.
While special sources in the customs confirmed earlier to “Hashtag” that there is an intention to return the opportunities for new fees.
It is noteworthy that on May 11, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers canceled the customs exemption that was previously granted to persons coming to Syria for permanent residence, as their personal belongings, tools and household furniture that accompanied them were exempted from customs duties, according to Article 178 of the Customs Law.
The canceled decision specified personal effects and stipulated that the furniture should be for one family, that it should be old, and that it should not be sold within a specified period, in addition to other conditions.
