At a time when gold prices have been relatively stable during the past two weeks, private sources revealed to “Hashtag” a new agreement being discussed by the Ministry of Finance and the Association of Gold Craftsmen, aimed at determining the new gold tax.
The sources said that the ministry’s proposal included imposing “laser” stickers on the produced gold coins, to replace the “stamp” that is currently being implemented.
The sources added that the ministry justified its proposal by “preventing counterfeiting and smuggling operations,” in addition to the fact that the new proposal could contribute to controlling the markets and uncovering smuggled gold coins.
The sources suggested that the cost of the laser tags would be high, because of their “safe” features, in addition to the digital “barcode” on them.
The new agreement between the Finance and the Association of Gold Craftsmen in Damascus came in conjunction with the end of the previous agreement between them, according to which the Finance receives an amount of 200 million Syrian pounds per month, according to the sources.
According to the sources, the ministry also proposed a project to standardize crafting fees in all markets, in addition to standardizing the consumer spending tax for each gold piece sold.
The Finance had recently undertaken a “unique” experiment, represented in buying a gold bracelet from the market to see the fee for its crafting, which amounted to 2.5/ million Syrian pounds, and thus the dispute with the Jewelers Association was resolved about the value of the consumer spending fee that the association must pay to the finances for the gold works.
According to the source, after purchasing the gold bracelet, the ministry photographed the bracelet’s bill and sent it to the chief gold craftsmen to clarify that “the amount of /100/ million Syrian pounds that the finance charges from Damascus jewelers per month, and /100/ million pounds from gold craftsmen in Aleppo per month.” According to the8 agreement signed between the Finance and the Goldsmiths Association, it is “not enough” to cover the entire consumer spending fee that must be paid for gold jewellery.
The source quoted officials of the Gold Craftsmen Association as saying in separate statements that there are between 30 to 40 kilos of processed gold coins that are sold and exported monthly to Qamishli and the Gulf countries, in addition to the quantities sold in the Syrian market. 200/ million Syrian pounds as a monthly fee for gold works in Aleppo and Damascus, “a little and not enough.”
