The page of the Presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic said that the child, Murtada Kinar, began to recover after performing the first operation to transplant blood stem cells at the Center for Blood Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Treatment for Children in Damascus.
The presidency page quoted the medical team that performed the operation for the child,Murtada Kinar (9 years), that the operation, although complicated, was successful, as this operation allowed the bone marrow to be reconstructed and thus the production of white blood cells, hemoglobin and platelets.
Mrs. Asma al-Assad visited the child Mortada at his home in Damascus countryside to check on him and share the joy of his safety and to hear from him beautiful childhood stories about what he witnessed and lived during the period of the operation, according to the Presidency of the Republic page.
Murtada is the first child to undergo this operation in the center for blood stem cell transplantation and cellular treatment for children in Damascus, after it was opened by Mrs. Al-Assad last June to be the first center of its kind for stem cell transplantation to treat children with cancer and incurable genetic and intractable blood diseases in Syria.
Mortada was suffering from what is known scientifically as (neuroblastoma), which is one of the most dangerous cancers or malignant tumors that affect children.
