An egg for 500 pounds: the Syrians are “forcibly” boycotting a basic food item

The prices of eggs in Damascus markets witnessed unprecedented increases, and the price of a carton of 30 eggs in shops ranged between 12 and 13 thousand Syrian pounds, and the selling price of an egg in some stores reached 500 pounds.
Al-Watan newspaper quoted some grocers’ owners as saying that “every day they buy eggs at a new price from the wholesaler, who raises the price on a daily basis,” noting that “people’s consumption of eggs has decreased significantly as a result of the high prices, and a large percentage of them buy two eggs or one egg when necessary.” Sometimes”.
Others confirmed that they “refused from buying eggs and selling them in their stores as a result of the high price of them and the lack of people’s desire to buy them.” The owners of wholesale egg shops explained that “their sales of eggs have decreased significantly as a result of the high price, and sometimes their daily sales to citizens do not exceed 10 cartons.”
A member of the Poultry Breeders Committee, Hikmat Haddad, said that “the cost of an egg carton for the breeder is currently about 9500 Syrian pounds, and the cost of one egg for the breeder is approximately 370 pounds.” He stressed that “the production of eggs is small and covers the daily need, given that the demand is low in light of the decrease in consumption with the increase in prices and the weak purchasing power of the citizen.”
Previously, poultry breeders attributed the price hike to raising the price of yellow corn fodder from 1,100 pounds to 1,500 pounds, and soy fodder to 2,300 pounds.
Haddad had confirmed that “there is a decline in the number of breeders, and this decline will continue as long as there is no specific price for feed in the market, in addition to the difficulties that breeders experience in securing diesel and gasoline for transportation between governorates to monitor poultry houses, especially since poultry farms are far from city centers from 40 to 50 km, which is reflected in the reality of prices.
Breeders expect prices to rise more in the winter if heating oil is not provided, while other breeders are forced to buy the material from the open market.
