Jordan talks about an “unhealthy situation” on its border with Syria: drug smuggling operations are systematic

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi confirmed the existence of an “unhealthy” situation on the border with Syria, as a result of drug smuggling operations, which he described as “systematic.”

new approaches

Safadi said in an interview with Al-Sharq TV, which was broadcast on Thursday evening, that there is a need for approaches that establish security and stability in southern Syria, according to the Jordanian “Ammon Agency”.

Al-Safadi added that the Jordanian armed forces and security services continue to carry out their duties to protect the interests of the state and protect the borders, while the government is communicating with everyone in order to solve any problems.

Al-Safadi stressed that “the stability of southern Syria is a Jordanian national interest, and that the Kingdom is keen on the stability of the south, and for that it is trying to deal with all the causes of instability in the south, which are reflected in Jordan.”

The solution to the “Syrian issue”

Safadi pointed out that the Syrian issue is a catastrophe and a political solution must be reached in the country in accordance with Security Council Resolution No. 2254 in a manner that protects Syria’s unity and cohesion, rids it of terrorism, preserves its sovereignty and also creates conditions that allow the normal return of Syrian refugees.
Safadi added that “stopping the Syrian crisis and ending this suffering is also a political goal and priority for us in Jordan, and we are working with our brothers and our partners in the international community to reach this solution.”

Refugee Support

He stressed the need for continued international support for refugees in Jordan, which hosts 1.3 million Syrians, adding: This is a huge burden, and we are doing everything we can to provide them with a decent life.
However, according to Safadi, this burden cannot be the responsibility of the host countries alone. It is a burden that must be borne by the whole world, until conditions are created that allow their natural return to their homeland.

‘Undisciplined forces’

The Jordanian army had previously claimed that “undisciplined forces” affiliated with the Syrian army support drug smugglers and carry out smuggling operations, noting that “Jordan’s borders with Syria are now among the most dangerous borders of the Kingdom.”

For its part, the Syrian government denies these allegations, stresses that it is making great efforts to prevent smuggling operations led by outlaws, and constantly announces the thwarting of smuggling operations from Syria to Jordan.
