Russian-Turkish agreement to send free grain and fertilizer to poor countries

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced today, Friday, that he agreed with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to send grain and fertilizers to poor countries free of charge, according to the Russia Today network.
Erdogan said, “Mr. Putin offered, during my call with him, to send grain for free to countries such as Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan, and we agreed on that.”
Erdogan indicated that the pressure caused by the excessive increase in energy, food and raw materials prices on economies will continue for a while.
He added that he conveyed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, “Antonio Guterres,” during a meeting with him yesterday evening, Thursday, his opinion that “grains should be sent to poor and undeveloped countries, and support should be provided to them.”
“We will ensure that grain ships reach all countries in need, particularly Somalia, Djibouti and Sudan, which are suffering from a serious food crisis and famine,” he added.
Erdogan described the position of Western institutions and countries that want to teach the world about human rights, while themselves ignoring the problems of famine in Africa, as a “shameful position.”
“We do not expect those who continue their colonial approach through new ways and means to take humanitarian positions in the face of crises,” he said, adding that “what bothers us is that some of our brothers in the Islamic world ignore the cries of the oppressed and victims.”
Erdogan stated that he intends to raise the issue of food supplies for African countries at the upcoming G20 summit in Indonesia, and said, “We demand the G20 to take measures to ensure that grain and fertilizer reach the least developed countries.”
Earlier, “Putin” confirmed Moscow’s readiness to supply grain to poor countries for free, even if it withdrew from the “grain deal.”
