One of the “internal opposition” parties in Syria announced its intention to nominate one of its members for the post of President of the Republic, noting at the same time that “the matter has not been decided yet.”
The Secretary General of the Al-tadamon Party (licensed party), Muhammad Abu Qasim, told RT that the party will begin to withdraw the nomination papers and prepare them, and the nomination or boycott will be presented next Saturday, at the meeting of the political bureau of the party for a vote on them.
He added, “There are only two possibilities that will be presented at the meeting: either the nomination or the boycott, while the vote for the ruling party’s candidate will not be. If the vote is for the nomination, our papers are ready, and if the office decides to boycott, we will issue a boycott statement for the elections.” On the possibility of the party obtaining the support of 35 members as stipulated in the constitution, a condition for candidacy, Abu Qasim says: “We have representation in the parliament and we have friends in it, but to ensure the support of 35 members, then we leave it to vote, and then it will appear whether the matter is a vote or a directive one.
On Sunday, the President of the Syrian People’s Assembly, Hammouda Sabbagh, called on those wishing to run for the presidential elections to submit their papers to the Supreme Constitutional Court, and announced that the polling would take place on the 26th of next month.
Al-tadamon Party is one of ten parties established against the background of the movement that took place in the country in 2011 according to the political parties’ law issued in 2011.
