The Director General of the General Authority for Forensic Medicine in Syria, Dr. Zaher Hajjo, revealed that since the beginning of the current year 2022, and until the 20th of last July, the authority recorded 101 cases of suicide.
In his interview with the Russian “Sputnik” agency, Hajjo explained that these cases are distributed among 77 males and 24 females.
Hajjo pointed out that Aleppo governorate came first, with 28 cases, followed by Damascus countryside with 21 cases, Damascus with 11 cases, Tartous with 13 cases, and Lattakia with 9 cases.
Hajjo pointed out that the governorates of Quneitra and Hasaka have not witnessed any suicide cases, according to his words.

Hajjo indicated that most of the age groups recorded by cases were in the second and third decades.
He pointed out that the youngest case recorded this year was for a 14-year-old girl, and 19 cases were for people under the age of 18, 9 of whom were males and 10 females.

Regarding suicide methods, Hajjo reported that 60 cases of hanging, 21 cases of using gunshots, 8 cases of jumping from high places, and 10 cases of ingesting toxic substances were recorded.
World Health Report
Various Syrian governorates have witnessed a rise in the suicide rate over the past years, according to what the World Health Organization confirmed in its latest statistics.
In a report issued last September, the organization revealed that it had recorded 3,400 suicide cases in Syria from 2013 until the date of the report’s issuance.
The World Health Organization indicated that it has trained more than 700 male and female doctors in Syrian civil society organizations, to deal with suicide attempts, and to provide the necessary psychological care to those in need.
