Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Toloberdi announced that his country will host the next round of Astana talks on Syria next month in the Kazakh capital, Nur-Sultan.
Toloberdi added that the guarantor countries of the Astana process (Russia, Turkey and Iran) asked the Kazakh Foreign Ministry to organize the next round, explaining that the exact date is still being studied, and that it will be held in the middle of next December, according to what was reported by Russian “TASS” agency.
The minister indicated that the next round will bring together the guarantor countries of the process (Russia, Turkey and Iran), the Syrian parties, in addition to representatives of the countries that enjoy the status of “observer,” noting that the ministry is currently working on determining the “level of talks,” as it usually represents the guarantor countries by Deputy foreign ministers of their country.
And last June, the 16th round of the Astana talks was held without any developments, except for a temporary halt in military operations.
In the final statement of the last round of talks, the guarantor states stressed their commitment to advancing the political process in Syria. The Russian, Turkish and Iranian guarantors affirmed their support for military calm in northwestern Syria, specifically in Idlib Governorate, through the full implementation of the agreements concluded in this regard. According to the Russian “Sputnik” agency.
The three countries (Russia, Turkey and Iran) are the guarantors of the Astana Agreement on Syria, which was launched between representatives of the Syrian government and a delegation of the Syrian opposition, in the Kazakh capital Astana (Nur Sultan), and the first rounds of talks began on January 23 and 24, 2017.
