Kuwaiti National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim revealed, on Monday, that a legislative amendment will be submitted to the parliament soon, allowing more opportunities for Kuwaiti women to enter parliament.
Al-Ghanim stressed that an amendment to the election law would facilitate opportunities for Kuwaiti women to enter the National Assembly, noting that the legislative amendment would soon be announced during a press conference, wishing there would be more women in the National Assembly, according to the Kuwaiti newspaper, Al-Qabas.
Al-Ghanim’s statements came during his participation in the honoring ceremony organized by Kuwait University for the former director of the university, “Fayza Al-Kharafi”, who is considered the first Kuwaiti woman with a ministerial rank, and the first woman to hold the position of rector of a university in the Middle East. The celebration was organized to coincide with the anniversary of Women’s Day Kuwait, which falls on May 16 of each year.
It is noteworthy that Kuwaiti women began to obtain their right to political practice for the first time in 2005, but they failed in the last parliamentary elections to obtain any seat in the National Assembly.
Earlier, the Inter-Parliamentary Union website published statistics highlighting the weakness of women’s participation in the Arab region in parliaments, far from United Arab Emirates, where women’s participation rates reached nearly 50%.
