The head of the Tunisian “Ennahda” movement, Rached Ghannouchi, considered, on Monday, that President Kais Saied granted himself pharaonic powers, ruling out Tunisians slipping into what he called the “square of violence.”
In a television interview with Al-Sharq channel, Ghannouchi indicated that three-quarters of Tunisians did not participate in the referendum on the constitution, because they do not trust the entire process, as he put it.
Ghannouchi stated that Tunisians did not take the referendum process seriously, considering that the entire constitution is based on handing over power to one person, according to his words.
Ghannouchi clarified that Ennahda demands an independent investigation into the electoral process, after it was surrounded by many doubts, according to him.
Ghannouchi pointed out that the electoral law does not allow Ennahda to challenge the election results, considering the role of the recent elections as laundering the corrupt currency and legitimizing the coup, he said.
“Democratic transformations in every country in the world go through moments of ups and downs, and we are currently in a moment of downswing after Qais Saeed granted himself pharaonic powers.” Ghannouchi said:
Ghannouchi responded to the calls of some parties for the Ennahda movement to withdraw from political life, saying: “I did not enter Parliament with a tank, and I arrived at it by popular will, but I was driven out of it by a tank.”
The Tunisian president put a new constitution to a referendum on July 25, and the Supreme Electoral Commission recently announced the approval of Tunisians on the draft constitution that was put to a referendum.
The commission revealed that 94.60% of Tunisians voted yes on the draft constitution, noting that the number of domestic and foreign observers to conduct the referendum reached 5800.
