Josef Borrell: There is no change in the three “red lines” towards Damascus

The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security of the European Union said:
Josef Borrell The European Union is committed to what he called the three “red lines”, which include not contributing to the reconstruction of Syria, not lifting sanctions, and not establishing full diplomatic relations with Damascus “unless a real and comprehensive political transition is firmly achieved in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254”.
Borrell said in an interview with the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat: “The political positions of the European Union have not changed because the behavior of the Syrian authorities does not change.”
The European official referred to the continued European support for Syrians inside and outside the country, saying: “Since the beginning of the Syrian conflict in 2011. The European Union and its member states have been the largest donors.
For humanitarian aid and aid to Syria and the region, amounting to 27.4 billion euros.
Borrell was speaking on the eve of the start of the donors’ conference in Brussels on Monday and Tuesday.
“This conference is the main donation event of the year for the Syrian people,” he said.
He added: What is different this year is that it came against the background of an unprecedented “military aggression” in the neighborhood of the European Union. Therefore, we want to show the Syrian people that despite the “Russian aggression against Ukraine”, we remain committed to continuing and not forgetting the Syrian people and the host communities in neighboring countries.
Borrell stressed that Russia was not invited to the conference, unlike what happened in the past five sessions.
“We call on partners who have a real interest to contribute to peace in the world and help the victims of the conflict. Russia has demonstrated through its aggression against Ukraine that it does not share this interest,” he said.
