Lebanese media: A senior security official “surprises” Syria with a visit

Today, Wednesday, Lebanese media reported that a high-ranking Lebanese security official had made a surprise visit to the Syrian capital, Damascus, where he would meet with Syrian officials, bringing with him a political message.
Lebanon 24 said that the Director-General of the State Security Agency, Major General Tony Saliba, went to Syria suddenly, and is expected to return today to Lebanon, after holding security meetings with Syrian officials that dealt with several issues, most notably the smuggling file and border control. In addition to the file of Captagon narcotic factories scattered in the rugged mountains, and the need to end this phenomenon for the good of both countries and other Arab countries.
The website quoted informed sources as saying that Major General Saliba may have carried a political message with him, related to the current developments or the file of the displaced Syrians in Lebanon.
The visit comes at a time when Lebanon is striving to control its borders on the one hand to stop smuggling, and on the other hand to combat the manufacture and export of drugs after the crisis that affected its relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
As for the file of displaced Syrians, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates their number at 1.5 million people, which puts pressure on infrastructure, services and the environment, in addition to competition for job opportunities, in a country that has been suffering from an unprecedented financial and economic crisis since the civil war that lasted 25 years.
