The Lebanese newspaper “Al-Akhbar” reported today, Saturday, that the Russian ambassador to Lebanon, Alexander Rudakov, obtained approval from his country’s government to provide a “gift” of wheat to Lebanon, amounting to 40,000 tons per month.
The Russian “gift” is scheduled to continue, on a monthly basis, until the end of this year, and it is also subject to extension.
The Russian ambassador explained the approval as helping Lebanon to overcome the flour crisis.
Radkov’s speech was preceded by a pledge a few days ago from the Ukrainian embassy in Lebanon to distribute a ship’s cargo loaded with wheat in the Lebanese markets as soon as possible, in the embassy’s announcement that it had obtained documents and evidence in which it claimed that the wheat on board the Syrian ship “Laodicea” was stolen from Ukraine.
Lebanon is witnessing, in addition to its many economic crises related to the loss of the local currency about 90% of its value, the banking crisis since 2019, and the rise in the prices of fuel and food commodities, an escalation in the bread crisis, which gathered the Lebanese at the doors of the bakeries, and created queues to obtain bread.
