Director of Al-Mowasat University Hospital in Damascus, Issam Al-Amin, said that the rates of receiving the vaccine against Corona in Syria are low, as only about one million people have received the vaccine, which is equivalent to only 6 percent of the Syrians, while the numbers should be much larger.
Al-Amin added in a statement to the newspaper “Tishreen” that many citizens are reluctant to receive the vaccine, “because they are affected by some social media that promotes in an unacademic and unscientific manner about problems with the vaccine.”
Al-Amin stressed that “the vaccine is safe and there are 9 billion people in the world who have received it of all kinds” and that “the vaccine is necessary because the probability of infection for the recipient of the vaccine is 8 times less, and the probability of the vaccinator entering intensive care or the possibility of his death is 25 times lower.”
On the developments of the pandemic in the country, Al-Amin said that the number of injuries began to increase gradually two or ten days ago, after it had decreased from 65 to 10 or 12 cases, and indicated that there are 35 cases of infection in the hospital distributed between isolation rooms and intensive care.
The newspaper quoted Al-Amin, that “the situation is being monitored, and if the numbers increase more than that, we have certainly entered a fifth peak,” and pointed out that the cases that are referred to the hospital are among the severe and critical cases, and that there is an increase in mild and moderate cases that are approached outside the hospital.
“Currently we are in the stage of observing the epidemiological curve, and in the event of an increase in the number of corona infections and a fifth peak, we are able to return to square one within hours by increasing the number of beds again, as it was in the past peaks,” Al-Amin said.
He stressed to the newspaper that “the preparations are complete in terms of the availability of protective clothing to protect the cadres and the full availability of medicines, with the preparations of the care rooms, especially oxygen, as it is the main element of the approach and is available in large quantities.”
Regarding the reasons for the recent increase in the number of infections, Al-Amin pointed to several factors, “the most important of which is the lack of adherence to the prevention of the virus, and four months ago a warning was made of cold waves and people usually sit during these waves in rooms with closed doors and windows, and the new mutant Omicron is characterized by rapid spread, and is able to spreading the infection quickly.
Al-Amin pointed out that the country “previously entered a fourth peak of Corona injuries, starting from the beginning of August 2021, and the numbers increased significantly, so the isolation and care rooms were expanded and the ambulance reception capabilities were expanded.” And that was before the number of injuries returned to decline, and the curve of injuries witnessed a long flattening (stability in the number of injuries recorded daily), unlike the third, fourth and first peaks, after which the numbers began to decline in the first half of January 2022.
