The Syrian industrialist, Atef Tayfour, said on his Facebook account, that he can flood the market with bananas at a price not exceeding 4,000-4,500 pounds, provided that traders are granted an import license. This post raised questions about this magic solution and at this relatively “cheap” price, especially since it is under The title of “public challenge” to the concerned authorities, after the “Syrian Trade” offered a kilo of bananas for 10,000 Syrian pounds.
Explaining his publication, industrialist Atef Tayfour told “Hashtag” that positive intervention is for the benefit of the citizen, not just the state.
This profit is outside the budget and not a profit calculated for it, explaining the benefits of granting import licenses, as it creates a competitive atmosphere and increases the supply of the material, which revives the market, relaxes the citizens and prevents smuggling.
Tayfur continued: Banana is one of the basics of life, especially for children from the age of one to five, as it is considered an essential food for their growth, so why every year this problem is repeated and the banana import licenses stop under the pretext of preserving foreign exchange? Until it becomes a dream for a large number of people .
In his speech, Tayfour indicated that the exhaustion of foreign exchange is still present, whether they stop the licenses to import bananas or not, because the open market exists and is strong, and the areas of smuggling still exist, and the markets are full of material, but the price of a kilo has reached 15-20 thousand pounds. This is a shame.
When asked about the truth of what happened and the source of the bananas in the Syrian trade halls, Tayfour said, “The bananas in the Syrian trade are confiscations, as the Customs Directorate confiscated 6500 kilos.
This is evidence that there are abuses, because the confiscated quantity is nothing compared to the reality of the market. He stressed that these confiscations are free from the source, but rather more than that, “All confiscations are fined huge amounts of money, which confirms the profitability of the concerned party and does not cost a single pound with the presence of bananas inside the country, so why were they offered at such a huge price for the citizen?
Tayfour pointed out that offering bananas at this price legitimizes the open market pricing the material at 15000 Syrian pounds as a minimum, and this is not a positive intervention. Import of bananas issued by customs, which in the worst case amounts to 2000 Syrian pounds.
Tayfur stressed that the price of bananas is global, meaning that it is treated as strategic materials. “Bananas have a stock exchange, and according to a simple calculation, we can determine the cost of importing bananas with all the processes of shipment, transportation, fermentation, storage and distribution, as it does not exceed 4500 Syrian pounds per kilo, and put it at the price of the 10,000 more than twice the world price.
Tayfour gave the ministry a solution, which is to import bananas from Al_Masnaa in Lebanon, so it benefits Lebanon and the Syrian market, where bananas are available at a price of 2000 pounds and are often bought in Syrian pounds, and the Lebanese bananas are a sought-after item in the Syrian market.
At the end of his speech, Tayfur confirmed that his public challenge does not belong to him personally, because importing bananas is not within the competence of his work, but rather it is to give solutions to the dilemmas that occur in Syria, and perhaps help importers of the material to restore life to their businesses.
It is noteworthy that the Syrian Trade launched the day before yesterday a quantity of confiscated bananas at a price of 10,000 Syrian pounds per kg within its halls, according to the available quantities, at a rate of 2 kg per person. What annoyed many citizens who denounced the free source of the material and the high price offered to them.
