Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that his country proceeds from the fact that there can be no winner in a nuclear war, and “it should not be unleashed. We defend equal and indivisible security for all members of the international community.”
During the conference of the signatories to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, he stated that Russia, as a country in the Treaty and one of its depositary countries, constantly follows the letter and spirit of the Treaty.
Our obligations under bilateral agreements with the United States to reduce and limit related arms have also been fully fulfilled, Russia’s TASS news agency reported.
At the same conference, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that “humanity is one uncalculated step away, which may lead to nuclear annihilation.”
The Secretary-General’s speech came at a time when humanity is facing a threat “unparalleled since the height of the Cold War,” according to what he was quoted by AFP as saying.
Guterres noted that “we have been exceptionally lucky so far. But luck is not a strategy, and it does not protect against geopolitical tensions that escalate to the point of a nuclear conflict.”
These concerns come at a time when the war in Ukraine has continued, since last February.
On the other hand, Taiwan and China are experiencing an atmosphere of tension, due to the possibility of a visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island that China considers part of it, as the Chinese Foreign Ministry warned that the Chinese army would not stand idly by, if this visit takes place.
