The decision to raise sugar and rice prices increases Syrians’ appetite for “bitter irony”: “Why were you afraid to raise… did we bother?”

The Syrian government raised the prices of sugar and rice after months of delay in distributing them to citizens, through the smart card.
And the Syrian Trade Foundation announced on its Facebook page, on Sunday, that “the next cycle for distributing sugar and rice via the electronic card will start from next Sunday, July 4, 2021, without adjusting the quantities allocated to the family.”
It said that it “set the selling price of sugar and rice to 1,000 Syrian pounds per kilo of these two substances, according to the decision of the Economic Committee in its last session.”
After announcing the new rise in rice and sugar prices, sarcastic comments poured out on the page of the Ministry of Internal Trade on Facebook.
One of the followers commented, “Why were you afraid to raise the price? Why did anyone ever bother you? We only have a mouth to eat.”
While one of the commentators said, “Everyone wants a salary for sugar and rice… and sits eating dry rice and sprinkling sugar on it, there is no control and nothing prevents this corruption and people are living below zero..”
For his part, “Firas Ahmed” commented on the news, asking: “People who did not take the allowances of the past months thought it was savings?”
Amer wrote, “It is normal to be at some raise.. And it is normal to reduce the subsidized materials because we know the crisis we are going through..and we understand..but it is disgusting and it is not normal that you lie in a way that makes the citizen no longer believe you.. It is disgusting that you talk and do nothing. And you underestimate the position you are in as (consumer protection) and as a defect, let us believe your words.”
It should be noted that the “Syrian Trade Corporation” doubled the price of “subsidized” sugar at the end of last year 2020, to increase its price from 350 to 800 Syrian pounds, due to what it said was an “exchange rate adjustment.”
