The Minister of Education in the caretaker government, Dr. Darem Tabbaa, revealed the details of social sentimental education, which the Ministry of Education announced recently, stressing that teaching this subject will not be only theoretical but practical with various activities.
The new decision drew many criticisms on social networking sites, especially since many students’ families complained during the past two academic years that their children did not receive the full curriculum, due to the announcement of the closure of schools and the imposition of the Corona virus.
According to the complaints received by the hashtag, “Karama.a” says that she suffered last year with her daughter, who is a student in the fifth grade, due to her lack of access to education from school.
She confirms that her teacher in class has been absent several times because she was suspected of being infected with the Corona virus, and then the decision to close schools came without warning.
Karama adds: “I do not think that my daughter received a real and complete education last year, and it was more appropriate for the Ministry to pay attention to this aspect, not to declare Sentimental education.”
In turn, Tabbaa said in statements reported by “Al-Watan” that social sentimental education will enter various educational stages this year, at a rate of two lessons per week, and then it will be expanded in the coming years.
The Minister of Education considered that social sentimental education is the most important pillar of education, and added: “Education in general is based on four pillars. The first is the traditional cognitive pillar, through which the student reads the book, memorizes what is in it, and examines what is contained in this book, and the second is social sentimental learning. Through which the student learns the skills of dealing with others and working in a team, as well as learning empathy, tolerance and acceptance of others, and this is a science in itself.
The third pillar that education is working to implement, according to Tabaa, is “learning how to enter the labor market, and not relying on the job secured by the state and waiting for it to be provided by the state for the graduate, where the student learns how to build his own project, how to enter the labor market, and find an appropriate job opportunity.” Subjectively, there is the fourth and basic pillar, which is the development of the self-personality and self-building of each student.
In the past, the focus was on mathematics, physics and science, while neglecting music, drawing and sports, while today all international references confirm that education is based on health aspects by relying on social sentimental education, according to Tabaa, adding that “this would enhance citizenship and belonging and develop physical ability. to our students.”
Coming generations need to develop social relations, according to their nature, because it was clear through the war we are waging that as a social environment we were suffering from self-closure, where we do not know each other, we are now working on the next learning skills so that we know each other correctly, and Learn life skills, music, sports and professions.
Talking about social sentimental education, it looks wonderful in terms of form, but on the other hand, has education worked to develop teachers’ skills to deal with this new subject, and will there be a shortage of teachers like the shortage in most academic disciplines, especially in the schools of the Syrian countryside, and the educational approach According to specialists, it needs “turning upside down”, as one of the teachers complains, and says: “Our suffering in schools is boredom.. chaos..hunger.. .. squawking .. chop .. cold .. road .. laziness .. parents, and everyone is waiting for the break ..
Everyone is waiting for the sixth lesson to end, the bell until it rings, very slow… the school year is at the door, and so far I don’t know what to say.”
On the other hand, and after two years in which schools did not complete the school curricula due to the Corona virus, the Ministry of Education did not move a finger except announcing two additional lessons on the “Sentimental Education”
What is the meaning of sentimental education at this time? Perhaps the Ministry of Education has not yet realized that what most troubles people is their “different inner feelings”.
