The customs actions and campaigns, during which they confiscated billions of Syrian pounds, did not end, according to previous statements by the Ministry of Finance.
Special information has been obtained by “hashtag” that specialized government committees have been formed, with the task of opening old files that include the names of hundreds of traders who have been dealing with major customs brokers since 2010, in order to hold them accountable.
This campaign, which was launched in a non-public manner, targets traders, customs brokers, and customs officials, by opening old files that lead to the confiscation of the properties of these traders and the imposition of money as fines that belong to the state treasury.
According to information obtained by “Hashtag”, the government committees distributed among the governorates have sent members of the customs and secret office to all traders dealing with customs brokers and demanded from them huge sums of money amounting to tens of billions, for their years of work in trade.
According to the sources, the deadline for merchants will expire within weeks with the expansion of their work.
These committees also issued summons lists for tens of customs officials, including guards, patrols, guards, and others, and made a complete inventory of their properties since 2010 until today, and confiscated all new purchased.
A few days ago, and within the same campaign, some customs brokers involved in bringing smuggled materials into the country were dismissed.
The Customs Directorate announced last month that the value of the fines collected from the investigated cases amounted to 80 billion Syrian pounds within 6 months.
At the time, “hashtag” monitored the most prominent “customs” campaigns during the last period, which targeted commercial stores and the offices of dealers of electrical and household appliances in the capital’s markets, especially in the Marjah area.
In mid-May, patrols of the Damascus Customs Directorate carried out a campaign that was considered the “largest” of its kind in the capital, targeting many warehouses and shops in the Sumeria region, and confiscated large quantities of smuggled smoke and tobacco, in addition to stored products of all kinds, the value of which exceeded $9. Billions of Syrian pounds.
Private sources revealed to “Hashtag” at the time a decision taken by the Damascus Customs Directorate, to expand the inspection and confiscation campaign to include many warehouses and storage areas for smuggled materials, especially smoke, tobacco and Turkish goods.
The campaigns carried out by the customs are seen by many experts as beneficial to the state treasury, and it is possible to curb the “restraint” of some greedy traders, but at the same time, they can be unfair to others, as there is no specific mechanism for their work other than collecting funds.
Instead of calling for setting limits on the work of customs patrols, economists believe that the chambers of commerce and industry should devise effective coordination mechanisms with customs that would allow the smuggling of smugglers to be rooted out.
And one of these billing mechanisms that the chambers of commerce are still reluctant to implement until today, without announcing a convincing reason, according to observers and economists.
