The National Center for Energy Research obtained a license to generate electricity based on renewable sources (solar energy, photovoltaic collectors) in Homs Governorate, and to connect the energy generated through the project to the distribution network.
The project was licensed under Electricity Law No. 32 of 2010, with a nominal capacity of 200 kilowatts, and the duration of the license granted for 25 years, according to the decision published by “Al-Iqtisadi” and issued on May 10, 2021.
At the end of October 2019, the government agreed to start implementing the Ministry of Electricity’s strategy for renewable energies until 2030, which includes the implementation of several projects based on renewable energies, allowing the saving of 750 million euros annually in oil equivalent.
In September 2020, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers set the purchase price of electricity produced from renewable energy, which can be connected to the distribution network, at 7 cents/euro per kilowatt-hour produced from solar collectors, and 6 cents per kilo produced from wind turbines.
The Ministry of Electricity revealed in early 2021 that the total electricity production from renewable energies (solar and wind) in the public and private sectors is approximately 28.9 million kilowatts, of which 22.2 million kilowatts are from the sun, and about 6.7 million kilowatts are from wind.
Syria’s daily electricity production is 2,700 megawatts, while it needs 7,000 megawatts per day, and its production depends on either fuel or raw gas, according to recent statements by the Minister of Electricity Ghassan Al-Zamil.
