With the first day of Ramadan, craftsman Muhammad al-Imam announced that many sweets shop owners had left the profession, due to the high production costs, the difficulty of securing them, and the low purchasing power of the citizen, who considered buying sweets a “luxury.”
Al-Imam said, in an exclusive statement to “Hashtag”, that many owners of sweets factories moved with the beginning of the month of Ramadan to “cook meals” to reduce losses. While those factories are seeking, according to him, to collect the rest of their working capital, in preparation for emigration to Egypt or Erbil, with the beginning of the upcoming Eid al-Fitr.
The prices of sweets are witnessing rapid increases, coinciding with the rise of most food and basic foodstuffs in the country, accompanied by a decrease in the sales movement due to the decline in the purchasing power of most Syrians.
Al-Imam pointed out that the main reasons for the high prices of sweets are due to the large rise in gas prices, of which the price of a cylinder reaches 225,000 pounds on the open market, and the diesel needed to operate generators, which are also scarce in it, in addition to the high prices of other production requirements, such as ghee, chocolate and cream, and the lower quality of the existing materials, which is a burden on the product.
Al-Imam added: “The process of making sweets at the present time oppresses the craftsman who is unable to provide the necessary requirements for production and achieve the desired profit, in addition to the oppression of the consumer who is unable to buy sweets during Ramadan as every year, with the rise in the prices of living materials, Therefore, buying sweets is a luxury that he will not be able to secure during this month, as he used to.”
