The Syrian Minister of Agriculture told “Hashtag”: Syria’s agricultural future is fine, but “the climate did not help us”

Syrian Agriculture Minister Muhammad Hassan Qatna told “Hashtag” that statements that talk about the collapse of Syria’s agricultural future are just misleading views of the truth.
During his defense of the low production figures of strategic crops in Syria, especially wheat, the Syrian minister said that the weather conditions during this season did not greatly help the production of larger quantities of wheat.
“If the weather factors improve, then agricultural production will improve better,” he added.
The United Nations World Food Organization said in a statement that Syria’s wheat production last year fell to the lowest production rate in the country’s history in 50 years.
According to the statement, the reason for the decline in wheat production is due to the decrease in the cultivated areas in the country due to the war, drought and bad economic conditions that Syria has experienced.
These statements raised fears among many of the imminent collapse of Syria’s agricultural future.
These concerns indicated that the strategic crops in Syria are not well and therefore, “Syria’s agricultural future is in danger.”
Earlier, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Syrian government received 600,000 tons of wheat during this season.
And the grain corporation’s share of it reached 520 thousand tons, and the rest was received by the General Corporation for the propagation and distribution of seeds.
Syrian journalist Ali Abboud criticized blaming the exceptional climatic conditions to justify the production decline, which is neither feasible nor convincing.
“These conditions have been unchanged since the nineties of the last century, and the difference is that in the past decades we have invested our water resources to produce enough strategic and basic commodities for us, while no party has bothered to provide irrigation for the lands planted with irrigated wheat during the past years, as happened in the Al-Ghab Plain this season! “He said.
Abboud questioned, as reported in the government weekly “Al-Baath” newspaper, about the feasibility of water from dams and irrigation networks if their water does not quench thirsty lands.
Abboud pointed out that drought and lack of rain are a reality, but “it is worth taking advantage of every drop that falls instead of lamenting over nature, which has not and will not be merciful to anyone who fails to address its deadly effects.”
