Two years of procrastination and promises… When will the “magic” GPS service launch?

About launching the GPS tracking system on various means of internal transportation and in all governorates at the beginning of next year 2022, the Director of Informatics in Damascus Governorate, Dr. Yasser Hajal, denied in exclusive statements to “Hashtag” the statements circulating this information.
Hajal stressed that the issue may be “delayed” a little and could last for a month, or more, and the reason for the delay is “a matter of time until all the governorates finish conducting the necessary information,” denying that there is someone who knows the exact date, due to some of the necessary operations, and in order to avoid possible errors or problems, he said.

Hajal indicated that the statements about launching the service were correct with regard to the governorate of Damascus, but the issue of its launch in general and unified throughout the country, postponed the issue for an additional month.
Hajal pointed out the importance of applying the system in monitoring the work of public transportation to narrow the transportation problem as much as possible, distribute fuel to eligible vehicles and stop their flow to the open market.
According to the governorate’s director of information technology, the project will detect waste in gasoline, oil, and even car spare parts. Where gasoline is filled according to cards for thousands of cars and vehicles that have stopped working for one reason or another, such as malfunctions, or because they have been burned, or the car may already be non-existent or completely destroyed, in addition to cars and vehicles belonging to entities in the public sector that do not have any activity, and they are parked for many clear reasons, but they are “ignored in pursuit of their fuel and even fictitious repair fees.”
A member of the Executive Office of the Damascus Governorate for Transport and Communications Affairs, Mazen Dabbas, had revealed that the GPS tracking system will be applied to various means of internal transportation and in all governorates at the beginning of next year 2022, stressing in a statement to “Al-Baath” that the preparation of its studies has been completed and is now in its last stages.

Dabbas stated that there is great reliance on the application of the system to solve the transportation problem and control its movement, noting that the Damascus governorate was the first in preparing its studies, and it was applied to a number of Damascus governorate mechanisms and gave amazing results, and the GPS system relies on a device placed in every bus or service Or any means of transportation, and the device gives the number of kilometers traveled by each service, and it also gives signals in the event that the line is changed by the service owner, and thus he is deprived of fuel.
In previous statements, the GPS project was supposed to be launched since the beginning of this year, to ensure the existence of an integrated system for the movement of public and private vehicles, and to expose waste and corruption in them.
However, the importance of the project prompted its generalization from Damascus to the rest of the governorates, to become an integrated system at the country level, bearing in mind that some private sector institutions have started working with the GPS system.
“Contradictory” statements about the expected date will be released at a time when the transportation crisis is getting worse day after day, it seems that controlling transportation prices and evading transportation lines will be more difficult day after day.
Transport workers are complaining about the difficulty of providing diesel and gasoline, their high prices on the open market, and the insufficient government allocations. Citizens suffer from a lack of means of transportation and some drivers control their prices.
It is noteworthy that the Damascus Governorate has not stopped talking for nearly two years about the “magic experiment” of installing GPS devices to monitor public transportation in the capital, Damascus.
At that time, the director of traffic and transport engineering in the governorate, Yasser Bassiouni, revealed that an experiment had been conducted of the device to be applied to buses and other public transport vehicles in the governorate of Damascus, from July 17, 2019.
