UAE summoned the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden, Lislott Anderson, on Tuesday, and informed her of her protest against the burning of copies of the Qur’an by extremists.
The Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem bint Ibrahim Al-Hashemi, informed the UAE’s rejection of all practices offensive to religions, as reported by the Emirates News Agency.
Al-Hashemi stressed the need to respect religious symbols and sanctities and to avoid incitement. Al-Hashemi also said that “such practices only lead to more tension, confrontation and congestion, at a time when the world needs to work to spread the values of tolerance and coexistence, and reject hatred and extremism.”
Swedish cities in the south of the country are witnessing violent clashes between Muslims and extremists, after a Danish far-right political leader burned copies of the Qur’an and announced his intention to burn more. Many Arab countries condemned what happened.
